What Is a Qualsafe Level 5 Diploma in First Response Emergency and Urgent Care (RQF)
This Qualification is the next step for those who have completed the Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care.
This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities,
to provide out-of-hospital emergency and urgent care.
For people who work or hope to work in emergency and urgent care settings who would be expected to
undertake clinical assessment, evaluate patients’ conditions and manage traumatically injured and unwell
patients prior to referral to the next echelon of care

Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) Skills Framework
• Based on Level 4 Associate Practitioner of the Skills for Health Career Framework
Qualsafe Level 5 Diploma in First Response Emergency and Urgent Care (RQF) Associate Practitioners (FREUC5
Associate Practitioners) work in a variety of out-of-hospital emergency and urgent care settings, having direct
contact with service users and others, providing high quality and compassionate care. Daily duties and tasks
for a FREUC5 Associate Practitioner would involve working as an individual or as part of a team responding to
emergency (999) and urgent calls, providing emergency and urgent assistance to the sick and injured. This qualification would also be suitable for those looking to work as a emergency medical technician, event medic, expedition medic, advanced close protection medic, search & rescue medic, offshore medic or any other area where a hight level of medical cover is required.

Course Structure
This course runs one week a month for 4 months alongside your 750hr clinical placement.
Once you have successfully completed your clinical hours and mentor sign off you will then be awarded the qualification.
The current 2026 course runs over the following dates, attendance is required at all dates:
2026 Course Classroom Dates:
Week 1 - 16th-20th February 2026
Week 2 - 16th-20th March 2026
Week 3 - 20th-24th April 2026
Week 4 - 18th-22nd May 2026

Placement
This course will require you to complete 750hr placement
A Minimum of 400 hours must be completed in a Out of Hospital Emergency and urgent care service or within the UK Armed Forces.
The remaining 350 hours can be claimed in a range of setting to include:
In hospital placement such as medical assessment units or emergency departments.
Primary Care, such as GP practices.
Speciality Placement such as maternity, cardiology or end of life care.
Currently within the South West, SWAST has reduced the amount of private ambulance crews on frontline placement. As such Apex can no longer guarantee a placement with in the South West. This is a South West wide issue at this current time.
As such it is advised to book this course with a placement provider in mind, such as your current employer or a agreed placement place. Apex will provide all your academic study support and provide support with you securing a placement, but you may have to look further that the south west at this time.
We have students successfully completing placements with there current employers or further afield such as south central or the midlands region.
You will have 2 yrs from the end of the classroom content to complete your placement hours.
